Chapter Sixteen

Isabella hastily stepped away from the receptionist. The lust pouring from the woman clogged her senses, creating a cloud in her mind. Is this what Victor dealt with on a daily basis due to his incubus side?

She marched down the hallway, uncaring where she went. She needed space from the relentless desire. How could he stand it? Would she end up like that if Basiik were removed from her? He insulated her from Victor.

You’ll be a slave to him. Kill the mage, steal his powers. Make us stronger, the demon demanded, and her fingers twitched, flexing her hidden claws.

I can’t steal his powers. And I’m not killing him. Orders changed, remember?

Basiik grumbled in her mind, prowling restlessly. His anger dampened the emotions swirling around her, and she took a steadying breath, embarrassed by her automatic response to bolt from an uncomfortable situation.

Isabella halted in the middle of the corridor and nearly jumped when Victor touched her arm.

“Hey, you okay? What’s up?”

“I’m fine, just a little overwhelmed.” She tossed him a small smile, uncomfortable with the concern in his eyes, and distracted herself by studying the people around them. Victor maintained his stoic facade, arms crossed to deter anyone from stepping too close to him.

“We won’t stay too long.”

She glanced down the hall, wondering which way to go.

“Wait, I know him.” Isabella spun around, staring at a patient being wheeled down the hallway by an orderly. She grabbed Victor’s arm. “I know him.”

“Who is he?”

“I was part of a support group. We’re all . . . heightened and some of us, all of us, had problems coping. He was able to ‘see’ through another’s eyes. He was afraid he’d get stuck one day. Why is he here?”

Even though it mentally drained her, she’d attended the weekly support group without fail. It helped to know others like her, although none of them had her ability. Each one manifested a different one, some of them on the dangerous side.

“Don’t know,” Victor said. “But you can bet I’ll find out.”

He jogged after the two men, halting them. Isabella followed at a more sedate pace, concerned she’d be swamped again. She shamelessly eavesdropped with her increased hearing. At least having Basiik in her head didn’t completely suck.

I heard that, inferior human.

Whatever. I’m in control, not you. Now hush, I’m listening.

“Victor Tremaine, Mage Enforcer. Why is this man a patient here?”

The orderly sized him up and took a step away from Victor. He swallowed, as if gathering his courage, and straightened his back. “I don’t discuss patients with anyone but their doctor.”

Isabella moved closer until she was in front of Richard and knelt down. No recognition flickered in his vacant gaze. His mop of reddish-blond hair fell across his forehead, almost in his eyes. She smoothed the strands to the side. He’d hated having his hair long, preferring a shorter brush cut. How long had he been here for?

“Richard? Can you hear me?” They’d known each other for almost five years, chatting online before finally meeting in person at the support group.
